Summer Camps 2012

Once again our 4 weeks of summer camps were very successful. Over 70 children participated in all weathers at times, so well done to all and big thanks to Club Coach Alan MacDonald.

BBQ and Scott Quaich - 11 August

What a turnout to our Annual BBQ - almost 50 people, simply fantastic! Good food, plenty sunshine, great company and some superb tennis! Well done to Scott Quaich winners Rachel Ni and David Giffin.

American Tournament - 22 July

Our 3rd American Tournament of the year was a blast! This is becoming a successful formula as yet again we had a large turnout with over 12 couples taking part and a few new faces too! The sun also made a rare appearance which helped! It was a close run competition with Wendy Ni and David Abbott taking the prize with runners-up being Claire Duncan and Ross Witney-Hunter. Well done to all!

Clarke Trophy - 1 July

The Clarke Trophy was a busy event this year. Having changed the entry requirements to partnerships with a combined age of over 70 we had an entry of 15 couples - the youngest aged 9 and the oldest over 80! The event was a great success, helped by the sun shining for most of the afternoon. Our partnerships comprised husband/wife, mother/ daughter, mother/son combos to name only a few! Well done to our champs Simon Reeve and Claire Duncan who narrowly beat Alison and Andrew Cramond in the final.

American Tournament - 20 May

The 2nd American Tournament of the year was well attended on a glorious sunny Sunday afternoon.  Seventeen competitors took part and a number of other club members came along to watch.  Competitors were representative of the full age range of the Club, with one match sporting the dream team combination of experienced generosity (Syl Pearson) nurturing junior ambition (Douglas Macartney). First prize, boxes of Celebrations, went to the unbeatable combination of James Mackinlay and Claire Duncan and second prize, a bar each of Galaxy Cookie Crumble went to losing finalists Fiona Foreman and Andy Macartney  because “that’s the way the cookie crumbles!”

Barnton Park Festival of Tennis – 12-13 May

The Barnton Park Festival of Tennis in conjunction with Macmillan Cancer Support heralded the official opening of our brand new courts and upgraded facilities and was a fantastic weekend.  Highlights included:

  • Official court opening ceremony with Christine Windmill (Tennis Scotland President) and Jan Forrest (Macmillan Area Fund-Raising Manager)
  • Open Mini Tennis Competition (U8's and U9's). Many congratulations to Jamie Croll (David Lloyd) who won the U9 event and to Straun Camburn Ledezma from North Berwick and Matthew Rankin (Mortonhall) who were our U8 winners. It was fantastic to see many of our own juniors taking part in some competitive play for the first time - well done to you all.
  • Exhibition Match – East Select v Barnton Park Select. A big thank you to the elite men for putting on a grand show. The tennis was awesome!
  • Over 60s Invitational Mixed Doubles Tournament - Many congratulations to our own David Scott and Rosemary Davidson who won the hotly contested event in very difficult conditions. Thanks to all who participated from Barnton Park, Waverley, Brucehaven and Lomond Park.

Karaoke / Quiz Night - 28 April

The inaugural Karaoke / Quiz night was a rip-roaring success. Quiz Master David Duncan kept the questions rolling - some easy, some tough and some totally bewildering! Many congrats go to the Macartney family who won the quiz on a tie break question against the Abbotts.......oh the tension! The King of the Crooners at the karaoke or should I say Queen of the Crooners was our very own Erica Reeve. Go girl!

Thistle Cup Success  - 21 April

The Thistle Cup was held on Saturday 21 April with a record 13 couples competing, with a very family orientated focus. Partnerships comprised of a number of mother/son, father/daughter, mother/daughter and husband/ wife combinations along with a number of member/visitor partnerships too. There was some great tennis, great banter and of course the all important Barnton Park tennis tea!

Congratulations go to our winners Jennifer Mair (guest from Colinton LTC) and Scott Duncan - if they defend the cup next year they will definitely be handicapped! Commiserations go to our valiant runners-up Rosemary Davidson and David Abbott. Well done to all!

2012 – Investment for the Future

In 2012, Barnton Park embarked on an ambitious £220,000 refurbishment programme for all its tennis facilities.  This included replacing our top three courts with a new terracotta coloured artificial grass surface, as well us upgrading the bottom two courts.  These are all now ready to play on!  Future plans include doubling the amount of our floodlit courts to four, and the provision of a mini-tennis area with orange/red courts ideal for junior tennis.
